This points out the fact that you have qualifications and that you're interested--two very important things for them to know. It also makes it harder for the person to turn you down because you're not asking IF you can have an interview, but WHEN. In essence, you're saying that you're qualified, interested, and that they'd be crazy not to at least talk to you. Try to do this in person, while dressed in business casual attire. I would say: Hi this is (name), I put in an application a few days ago I was wondering if a manager is available to speak to. and then just ask the manager if they have had any time to look over your application because your very interested in the job. yes, you HAVE to be persistent, that is the key to getting any job.

But, if your going to follow up - call the store that you sent the application to and ask for the manger or hiring manger. What you should say is your name (very important) and you are following up on an application you submitted on (whatever date) ....conversation should progress from there. Best of luck!
