Should you follow up on a job application submission if the company states no calls? 1 comment

If a company’s automated response to a job application includes something to the effect of “we will contact you if your skills fit our needs” is it appropriate to follow up? Can following up hurt your chances of getting a call because you ignore the company’s request? If you have any insight please advise I have had this debate with other job seekers and no one has an answer.

I recently applied for an internship. I also read that it is a good idea to follow up with a call or a letter( ‘follow up your application with a phone call, a letter or even a visit. Your interest and enthusiasm will distinguish you from other job seekers’). But how soon is it appropriate to follow up?
